The catheterization procedure must always be carried out under guidance or direction of a healthcare professional
-Gather applicable equipment and inspect products before use (single catheter, catheter bag or receptacle, nonsterile gloves, liquid soap and tap water, washcloth or towelette, clean towel, wash basin or sink, and water-soluble lubricant)
-Wash your hands using soap and water
-Cleanse the urethral opening
-Open the catheter package and put on gloves, if available
-Slowly and carefully remove the catheter from the package by only touching the funnel end
-If using lubricant, squeeze it out of its package to coat the catheter
-Insert the catheter slowly and carefully to obtain urine flow and drain into an appropriate receptacle
-When bladder emptying is complete, slowly and carefully remove the catheter
-Discard the catheter per the physician’s instructions and wash your hands
